Many dogs suffer in the hot weather, especially dogs with dark fur or a thick coat and short of keep throwing buckets of water over your dog or turning on the hose, it is a problem keeping hot dogs cool on hot days, especially in the car or on a hike.  We came across this Ruffwear Swamp cooling dog coat in the States a few years ago and thought they were a really simple, clever solution to the problem.

When we first saw these cooling dog coats, we thought there would be chemical gel inside, rather like the cooling eye masks you put in the fridge and then put on to keep cool but there are no chemicals in the product at all, which is good, as it means it is safe and non-toxic.  The cool dog vest works on the natural process of evaporation:

Basically evaporation happens when atoms or molecules escape from a liquid and turn into a vapour or gas, just like water evaporates from a puddle and its molecules turn into gas.

So you just soak the dog cooling coat in cold water for 10 minutes or so, wring it out and put it onto your dog (which is simple with the easy locking buckles). The cooling dog coats have three layers.  The middle layer acts like a sponge absorbing and storing the cold water.  The top layer is a fine mesh which aids evaporation of the water from the  middle layer and the cooled water now keeps your dog’s body cool -simple but clever.  You can re-soak the cooling dog coat as often as necessary.

The product isn’t bulky but super light and comfy for your dog to wear.  The light ice blue colour also helps with protection against the sun and it looks very smart on, as you can see from our pics above.  You could put a backpack on top of the dog cool vest but you would need to soak it more often – we just soak ours in a stream when out hiking.
